Tubal ligation won’t just prevent pregnancy

Most people who have a tubal ligation voluntarily seek out a more long-lasting method of birth control. But sometimes it wont be as voluntary.

For instance, if you suffer from a medical condition that could make pregnancy difficult or endanger your health, such as:

  • Severe hypertension
  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Systemic lupus
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • For more medical conditions that put you at risk, visit Northwestern Universitys webpage.
  • Tubal ligation and fallopian tube removal are also options if youre at an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

“Thats because some forms of cancer actually begin in the fallopian tubes and spread to the ovaries,” says David Diaz, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center.

I am now four months into my pregnancy and we couldn’t be happier to know that we are having a boy. Doctor Sharara has given us, especially my fiancé, the gift of life – and that is priceless! We are forever grateful to him and his team, we can’t wait to have our picture taken in his office with our future son.

We began our journey at the beginning of the year, and I was shocked to learn just how much effort went into performing IVF. Doctor Sharara was so optimistic, and quite honestly, that really motivated me, that I never had any doubts that I could or shouldn’t accomplish this. We started the IVF process, and I made sure I was following all the directions, taking my medication and getting injections every day until the implantation day. We trusted Dr. Sharara with everything, and we complied with all requirements to facilitate the process. Unfortunately, our initial IVF procedure was unsuccessful; after the initial sonogram, when the doctor informed me that there was no baby, I felt awful. Knowing how badly Manuel wanted this made me feel for him. I was angry with myself and dejected about the situation. Doctor Sharara’s concern for my health and simple recommendation that I take a break made us feel better.

I met my fiancé, Manuel, nearly 10 years ago. I could see myself falling in love with him because of how wonderful and kind he was; all I wanted was to start a family with him. Although I wasn’t sure we were on the same page at the time because I was a single mother of three and he was an only child, things were going great between us. Three years into our relationship, my kids and I moved into his house, but we never discussed having kids together. We eventually bought our new home together two years later, and a year after that, we became engaged. After our children had grown and our oldest had a baby, I became a grandmother. Our grandchild gave us the desire to try for a child of our own, so we decided to do so.

As a result of being told his entire life that he couldn’t have children of his own and not having any, Manuel never worried about it. I questioned him about having a child because I was ready, in good health, and feeling so powerful. He said we could continue on this journey together if I found a doctor, so I started looking and making calls. Because I had consistently been rejected since I was 50 years old, I found it harder than I had anticipated. I started to feel hopeless before discovering the VCRM website. I informed Manuel that I had located the location for us after thoroughly researching it, and we went ahead and scheduled an appointment.

I’ve never been happier to interact with such wonderful people; everyone here, from Doctor Sharara to the entire staff, is so wonderful. I had such a great love for that office that I always looked forward to my appointments there. I had no idea what I was getting myself into because I was so eager to find a doctor that I didn’t consider the difficulties and everything that needed to be done for this journey. I promised myself that I would try to make my fiancé as happy as possible so that he could experience the wonderful experience of becoming a father. Being a mother and experiencing that unwavering love has been everything to me; there is nothing greater than that.
