Look for white spots on an ultrasound image to see solid tissues like bones and dark spots on an ultrasound image to see fluid-filled tissues like the amniotic fluid in the uterus. You might be able to see your baby’s head at 12 weeks, and at 20 weeks, you might even be able to see the spine, heart, feet, and eyes. The letters and numbers at the top of the ultrasound are merely a hospital reference and have no bearing on the image itself, so don’t worry about them. Sonographers perform ultrasound scans, and radiologists, cardiologists, or any other specialists may infer the results from the scans. The sonographer uses a wand-like device, i. e. transducer, which is placed on the patient’s skin. The internal body structures are created when high-frequency sound waves bounce back off of fluids and soft tissue. The sound with frequencies that a typical human ear cannot hear is referred to as ultrasound. Although higher frequencies provide better quality, the skin and other body tissues can more readily absorb them. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed to monitor the health and development of the unborn child. This scan is painless, non-invasive, and safe for both the mother and the unborn child.

What does red or blue mean on an ultrasound?

Red and blue colors represent the movement of the blood. Red indicates blood flowing toward the probe, while blue indicates blood flow away from the probe.

When blue and red are combined on the screen, it may be a sign of turbulence, coherent flow, or circular flow.

Different shades of blue and red indicate velocity. Darker shades denote a lower velocity, while lighter shades show a higher velocity.
