Even though you can’t feel the movements yet, your baby is already testing out their new reflexes and abilities by snoozing, stretching, swallowing, and even thumb-sucking. Additionally, they are beginning to lose their top-heavy appearance as your baby’s head and length start to equalize.
Your baby is approximately 6 inches long and weighs 6 ounces when you are four months pregnant. In addition to their developing nervous system, your baby’s facial features, including their eyelids, brows, hair, and eyelashes, are all beginning to develop.
Your unborn child will grow the lanugo, a thin coat of hair that covers their body, around 16 weeks of pregnancy. When lanugo forms, it aids vernix, a waxy substance, in sticking to your baby’s skin. Your baby’s skin is shielded from the amniotic fluid they are floating in by the lanugo and vernix working together. Your baby is shielded by the amniotic sac as they grow. When the amniotic sac ruptures, “water breaking” refers to that event.
